The inventors propose a new control algorithm for the regulation of blood glucose in type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes.
The innovation implements a control law to regulate the insulin delivery rate by a pump according to the results of a continuous glucose sensor. The goals are to keep blood glucose within tight control, to improve the quality of life and to prevent long-term diabetic complications.
The controller demonstrates its efficiency in silico with the FDA-approved simulation model of glucose-insulin system (Diabetes Technology Center of University of Virginia). These preliminary results suggest the powerful benefit of this strategy for the development of an artificial pancreas project.
