CONTEXT

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) affects nearly half a billion people worldwide, historically in the northern hemisphere and recently in developing countries due to a massive rural exodus. Health expenditure amounts to more than 590 billion euros, including 30 billion euros in active pharmaceutical ingredients.

DESCRIPTION

The laboratory demonstrated, in vivo:

1) the preventive effect against type 2 diabetes of plant extracts in healthy rats fed a high fat and sucrose diet causing the onset of T2D,

2) the therapeutic effect in Zücker rats suffering from incurable type 2 diabetes.

Blood glucose, insulin, glucose tolerance, insulin sensitivity, triglycerides, cholesterol and lean to fat mass ratio are either preserved (healthy rats) or improved (T2D sick rats).

No effects were observed in healthy rats with a normal diet.
