DESCRIPTION
Wound tissues and intact skin have marked differences in their electrical impedances. Electrical stimulation has been shown to help accelerate wound healing. Thus, by incorporating a multi- electrode array in a wound dressing, it is possible to map and characterise the wound and the healing processes and to apply optimally targeting therapeutic stimulation. The continuous monitoring of the tissue impedances under individual electrodes in the array enables the real-time monitoring of wound size and shape. Based on this data, subsets of electrodes in the array, e.g. those directly above the wounds, can be connected electrically together to form a composite, wound-stimulating electrode of the correct size and shape, thus enhancing the effectiveness of the treatment.
All of the above can be done without the need of removing the dressing, thus avoiding unnecessarily disturbing the wound.

STAGE OF DEVELOPMENT
A prototype monitoring and stimulation system is presently being developed.

ADVANTAGES / NOVELTY
• Cost-effective wound mapping and healing system
• Atraumatic, continuous monitoring and charcterisation of chronic wounds
• Optimally targeted electro-stimulation adapted to the wound

APPLICATIONS
Wound mapping and healing for chronic wounds, venous or diabetic ulcers, bedsores and burns.
