The invention consists of a new fluorophore structure dedicated to live-cell imaging and fluorescence microscopy. It uses a two-photons fluorescence excitation process where absorption and emission functionalities are totally decoupled.

The very principle of the invention is based on the association between complementary chromophores: a « core chromophore » with the two-photons absorption functionality that transmits the excitation coupled to one (or several) BODIPY type chromophore at the periphery acting like emitter. Consequently, it's possible to build separately both molecular designs to increase absorption cross-section and fluorescence performances of the device.

The probes are also very efficient in monophotonic imaging.
