DESCRIPTION
The screening technology uses the powerful Drosophila/bacteria interaction model in the case of a nutritional challenge (nutrient scarcity or imbalance). Growth promotion is assessed by measuring the length of Drosophila larvae (juveniles) that have been associated at the embryo stage to the tested bacteria. Larval length is measured at the end of an adequate growth period in the presence of the bacteria.
STAGE OF DEVELOPMENT
Acknowledged proof of concept
The validity of the methodology has already been successfully demonstrated on Drosophila juveniles, with lactobacilli probiotic strains belonging to 8 differents species and on mice, with Lactobacillus plantarum strains.
Current research and development Proprietary probiotic bacterial library implementation. New screening methods on other phenotypes than juvenile growth.
ADVANTAGES / NOVELTY
• Easy to implement
• Possibility to screen a great number of bacteria strains in a short time and for a wide range of probiotic bacterial species
• High sensitivity:differences in growth-promoting effect can be observed in bacterial strains belonging to the same species.
• Reduce the use of cost-expensive mouse model
• Enhance the number of probiotic candidates for preclinical and clinical development
APPLICATIONS
• Food industry: Functional food (human) or feed (animal) ; Regular consumption ; Food supplements
• Pharmacy: Probiotic therapy; Disease prevention
