New luminescent probes dedicated to cellular biology imaging (fluorescence microscopy, FACS…) have been designed. They are lanthanide-based complexes, highly soluble in water and in biological media. They show specific emission properties compared to classical fluorophores, like high brightness, long lifetimes and very thin emission spectra. Specific cellular targeting is possible after conjugation with biomolecules, and FRET experiments can be conducted with appropriate fluorophores. Excitation wavelength range is compatible with most commercially available equipment.
