DESCRIPTION
The laboratory has developed a wet spinning and sequenced coagulation process to produce polysaccharidic multimembrane macrofibers.
Macrofibers are made of natural polysaccharides such as chitosan, hyaluronic acid, alginates, pectins or modified polysaccharides like carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC).
Macrofibers made with polysaccharides in a state of hydrogel can be more or less stiff and porous (200-500 nm). Thickness, size, form and number of membranes are controlled parameters. 2 to 4 successive membranes can be obtained with an empty or solid core. Central internal canal diameter is between 50 micrometer up to several millimeters. Intermembrane space is between 20 μm up to 1 mm.

STAGE OF DEVELOPMENT
Manufacturing of chitosan hollow macrofibers containing 4 membranes.

ADVANTAGES / NOVELTY
• Macrofibers made of water based natural polymeric materials (such as chitosan) that are biocompatible, biodegradable, bioresorbable and bioactive
• Internal macrofibers diameter: 50 μm to 1 mm
• Hollow or solid polysaccharidic macrofibers containing one or several membranes
• Possible scale-up for industrial applications
• Use of conventional, non sophisticated equipment

APPLICATIONS
• Tissue engineering, co-culture: bioactive multimembrane bioreactors
• Drug delivery: controlled release of one or several active principles
• Biomaterials manufacturing
