DESCRIPTION
Cationic particles are obtained by the complexation of chitosan with various polyanions. They are spherical and are micron-, submicron- or nano-sized. They are very stable in physiological conditions (pH, salt) at room temperature. This high stability comes from physico-chemical properties of chitosan (acetylation degree and molar mass) and does not depend on anionic polymer molecular weight.
Particles can include active ingredients or compounds of interest such as proteins, DNA, RNA, vaccines, perfumes, etc. They combine with particles by encapsulation during particles synthesis. They adsorb onto interface of pre-formed particles or they diffuse inside them.

STAGE OF DEVELOPMENT
Encapsulation of antigens: p24 protein of HIV1. Antigenic power of obtained particles was identical to the gold standard Freund’s adjuvant one.

ADVANTAGES / NOVELTY
• High stability in physiological conditions (neutral pH and salt rich medium).
• Low toxicity, bioresorbability and non immunogenicity of chitosan.
• Encapsulation or adsorption of various active principles or compounds of interest.
• Green production process : uses only water and is energy efficient

APPLICATIONS
• Pharmacy: drug delivery, diagnostic
• Imaging (fluorescent, magnetic markers)
• Cosmetics: cutaneous applications, wrinkle filling…
• Food industry: sweeteners…
