BACKGROUND

Used for decades, Radio Frequency Identification has proven benefits including no line of sight requirement, read/write possibility, possible simultaneous reading of multiple tags especially or high speed, … Despite the higher cost for initial implementation, it is often preferred to barcode-based solutions, offering accurate and real-time supply-chain management, goods and/or people tracking… However, some limitations delay the diffusion of RFID technology in harsh environments, especially critical industries.

The HARDENED RFID TAG presented hereafter illustrates the expertise of the IM2NP Laboratory (Marseille, France). Successfully developed within a research FUI-funded program involving several industrial partners, this passive tag overcomes the challenges of operation on metal and is compliant with demanding aeronautics regulations.

KEY BENEFITS vs. EXISTING

HARDENED RFID TAG differentiates mainly through:

• Harsh environment operating (T, P, H, shocks)

• Weight: 3 g

• Footprint: 6.5 x 37 mm², 3.2 mm thick

• Readable (up to 0.7 m) on metal parts

• Flame resistant (self-extinguishing)

DEVELOPMENT STATUS

• Designed for easy industrialization

• Samples available

• Successfully tested onboard an Eurocopter aircraft in operation

APPLICATIONS

Industries requiring RFID tags operating on metal parts +/- harsh environment:

• Aeronautics

• Oil & Gas

• Nuclear

• Rail
