MARKET

• Algae are recognized as particularly attractive sources of polysaccharides for the industry

due to their high extraction yield and to the diversity of biological activities possible.

• Marine-origin cosmetic ingredients are a major trend thanks to their multiple characteristics:

Naturality, multi-purpose, anti-aging, bio-similarity with the skin.

• The global market for cosmetic ingredients should hit 24.5 billion dollars in 2018 with an

annual growth rate of 4.6%.

TECHNOLOGY DESCRIPTION

• Red algae contain sulphated polysaccharides, agar and carrageenan, for which the industrial

use is known as a gelling agent.

• The homology of their structure with that of glycosaminoglycan present in human

connective tissue, enables these molecules to mime some of their biological activities

(anti-aging, wellness) and to envisage cosmetic uses. The method for extracting polysaccharide

from red algae is secured and does not present a technological bottleneck for

its industrialisation.

• Biological activity for cosmetic use is being validated.

Competitive ADVANTAGES

• An exotic origin: Madagascar.

• A securable industry

• Marine plant source

• Biological activity demonstrated (Anti-coagulant).
